This blog will be used by students in ED 5254, Characteristics of Computer-Based Instruction, at Temple University.
To provide students to ask questions that there may not have been time for. In addition to providing time for students to further discuss at length a topic or idea. Students can use a blog to share further findings on a topic or idea, debate, challenge in a formal fashion for a particular subject. It is a good teaching tool to invite feedback and participation in a noninvasive way especially for students who may be shy or afraid to raise their hands.
Potential liability between students and teachers? Dave K
One disadvantages to blogging with students is that it is harder to control the content that is posted, making sure that it is appropriate to the subject and that appropriate language is being used. Blogging, however, can help students become more comfortable communicating and collaborating with their classmates. Teachers could also use blogs as a way to asses the knowledge gained after/during a lesson
Drew Keegan...One of the ways I'd like to start a student blog is as a journaling tool. The possible drawback is that students may use the chance to post a response to be unnecessarily critical of another student.
One advantage is that students who are shy about speaking in front of others have a chance to participate.-Rachael Henkel
I believe using a blog in a classroom can be quite useful, although there certainly are some potential problems. I think using blogs may allow students to engage the material in multiple ways, and allow them do learn from each other.a teacher also must concern themselves with how students are using the blog. efforts must be made to educate the class on proper usage and to treat all ideas and people with respect.terry maguire
After students share their artwork with the class or it has been put on display, other students can post comments about what they liked about the student's work.Students frequently have questions at the end of class, they could use a blog to ask their question while it is still fresh in their mind.
Possible advantages include:Using a real-world response technique (using an internet site's comment/post capabilities) to demonstrate an opinion or mastery of a technique - authentic performance assessmentProvides opportunity for students who are shy/introverted to state an opinion/thought for the class/teacher to read without having to speak in front of the whole classPossible disadvantages include:Lack of internet access could make it impossible for some students (challenge to practicality of assignment)Harder type of assessment for students who would rather state an opinion/express a thought verbally in class, rather than in writing
The french have a term for the feeling of realizing what you wanted to say/should have said: l'esprit d'escalier. It literally means "the spirit of the stairs" - referencing the experience of realizing what you wanted to say only after you are on the stairs, and the remark is no longer relevant.
Blogs could be used in the classroom to hold a class discussion or debate, especially if the topic is controversial and some students want to remain anonymous. A significant advantage is that students love to use technology to create something. They also love to contribute to discussions, especially if they're about a topic that the students are interested in. One disadvantage is that an opportunity is lost to teach the students rhetoric, how to communicate verbally, face to face - skills which are probably wanting in today's generation and which will be essential for their success in the future.Erin Lovejoy
My name is Catherine and I would use the blog to post questions and allow student to ask questions about specific topics/subject matter.
Hey there. i learned some interesting things today. Thanks. idk anything a/t blogs...sorry...TM
A blog could be used for students to answer reflective questions posed in class. It could also be used as a way to the teacher to asses student learning/ progress/ difficulties. Another advantage is that students may feel better able to express themselves and their thoughts with less self consciousness of their peers. A disadvantage of using blogs is that students may have better oral communicative skills to express themselves in class, face to face with peers, rather than over a computer. Ilana
Advantages could include students sharing ideas that they think of after class. Disadvantages could be when students share negative or inaccurate opinions publicly.Mark
Blogs are a great way to create and provide a continuous stream of information and thoughts for others to view. It is particularly useful if the content of the discussion is based on a particular and predetermined subject or agenda.
It allows students to ask questions that they may be afraid to ask. Gives students other ways to participate in the class without having to speak up. Kelly Thomas
Some of the disadvantages of blogging are sometimes the original subject gets lost and the argument gets sidetracked. Some advantages of blogging are, gives the person who would not normally comment in person to speak freely on a subject.
